Ernest Wilhelm Hengstenberg (1802-1869) was one of the most notable and able giants of Lutheran orthodoxy of the nineteenth century. By the time he was seventeen, he was qualifìed to enter the University of Berlin. His proclivities for the Old Testament and Semitic philology earned him his position at Basel Missionary College. At the age of twenty-six he was named Professor of Theology at the University of Berlin.
